Composite (cosmetic) bonding explained

Bonding is a cosmetic procedure that uses a composite resin to repair decayed, fractured, chipped or discoloured teeth.

The resin material is tooth coloured, meaning that the repairs can blend almost seamlessly with the natural tooth.

When to choose composite bonding

Bonding is one of the most straightforward and inexpensive cosmetic dental treatments. It is most commonly used for cosmetic purposes and improving the look of damaged or discoloured teeth.

Bonding can also be an effective way to lessen gaps in between teeth and improve their length, shape or colour.

The treatment can also be used as an alternative to amalgam fillings or to protect exposed areas of a tooth's root when the gum line has receded.

Composite bonding benefits

Fixes many dental issues - Composite bonding can help solve a large number of dental problems and minor cosmetic defects such as:

  • Chipped teeth
  • Discoloured teeth
  • Crooked and mis-shaped teeth
  • Spaces and gaps
  • Cavities

Simple - Dental bonding is an extremely quick and straightforward procedure when compared to other specialist treatments such as veneers and crowns.

In the majority of cases, the treatment can be done in a single visit in as little as one hour, however this depends on severity of the case and number of teeth being treated.

Pain free – Dental bonding is one of the least painful and evasive procedures, with most patients not feeling any pain. Unless bonding is being used to fill a cavity then anesthesia is not required.

Better tooth protection – During cosmetic bonding, there is usually very little enamel removed from the tooth which means your tooth health remains unchanged. (Enamel is the hard surface layer that protects your teeth). However with crowns and veeners, more of the enamel is removed, so there is less protection for your teeth.

Lower cost - Compared to other procedures such as veneers, cosmetic bonding is considerably cheaper.

The composite bonding procedure

Bonding doesn’t require any preparation and an anesthetic is unnecessary unless the tooth is decayed (a cavity). Your dentist will then select the composite resin colour to match your existing teeth as closely as possible.

The tooth surface is gently roughened and coated with a special liquid to allow the bonding material to securely adhere to it.

The resin is applied to the tooth and worked into the desired shape before being hardened under ultraviolet light.

Your dentist will then trim, shape and polish the result to match the rest of the tooth surface.

Treatment length

The procedure only takes between 30 minutes and an hour to complete. Several appointments may be needed if more than one tooth is being repaired.

Smoking and consuming food/drinks that can cause staining (such as coffee and tea) should be avoided for 48 hours after the procedure.

As well as good general oral care, including brushing twice a day, we advise regular visits to the dental hygienist for professional cleaning.

Risks

The bonding material isn't as strong as a natural tooth. For example, the resin can be chipped by habits such as biting fingernails or chewing pens.

The repair can last for several years, though the exact length of time is influenced by the extent of the bonding and how well you look after your teeth.

Book your appointment

We would be more than happy to carry out a check-up of your teeth to assess whether cosmetic bonding would be appropriate for you.
